It’s a challenge finding a children’s Bible that approaches the Scriptures from a redemptive historical perspective (versus one with moralistic overtones). Previous to finding this one, during my children’s Bible time, I often found myself having to buttress each story with further explanations on how it fits in the overall flow of the Bible. The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name has been a godsend. I recommend it highly for kids and parents.
“It’s an adventure story about a young hero who came from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It’s a love story about a brave prince who leaves his palace, his throne, everything to rescue the one he loves. It’s like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life. “You see, the best thing about this story is—it’s true. “It takes the whole Bible to tell this story. And at the center of the story there is a baby. Every story in the Bible whispers his name. He is like the missing piece in a puzzle— the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together and suddenly you can see a beautiful picture. “And this is no ordinary baby. This is the baby on which everything would depend. This is the baby that would one day—but wait, our story starts where all good stories start. Right at the very beginning …” (excerpt from The Jesus Storybook Bible)

I remember my dad used to read these types of books to me every night. They’re how I got my start in the Word, and books in general, when I was young.

It’s a truly outstanding Bible and, as you noted, a great way to teach a robust biblical theology to both children and parents.
Another great children’s Bible that I’ve come across is the “Big Picture Story Bible,” published by Crossway. Its strengths are similar to those of the Jesus Storybook Bible: the overall flow of salvation-history is highlighted throughout with special emphasis on the “kingdom” motif of God’s king ruling over God’s people in God’s land. (If you’re familiar with Grame Goldsworthy’s work you’ll see his influence here.) The accompanying illustrations are outstanding and there is a very touching dedication page in the beginning.

We love both Bibles and enjoy reading them together with Timothy.
